Kelyanite is a very rare mineral; although it was approved in 1981, to date (September 2022) it has been reported only from the type locality.

Localities

At the type locality, the Kelyana Hg Deposit, Middle Kelyana River, North-Muya Range, Baunt District, Buryatia, Russia, kelyanite occurs as irregular grains up to 2 mm in size in the oxidation zone of the stibnite-cinnabar ores. Associated minerals include calomel, eglestonite, antimony oxides, native mercury and shakhovite. It replaces calomel and is also replaced by calomel (AM 68.1248-1249).
