To date (March 2020) zincgartrellite has been found only at the type locality, the Tsumeb Mine, Oshikoto Region, Namibia.
It is a rare supergene arsenic-bearing mineral occurring in an oxidised zone of a dolostone-hosted hydrothermal polymetallic ore deposit (HOM). It has been found on massive chalcocite associated with wulfenite and duftite (Webmin). Other associated minerals include tsumcorite, stranskiite, leiteite, quartz and tennantite (HOM). It has also been found as as encrustations of crystals less than 0.1 mm in size, associated with zincolivenite and quartz, on silicified, mineralised dolostone (Tsumeb).
