Långbanite occurs in crystalline limestone and manganese-rich skarn in metamorphosed manganese deposits (Webmin). Associated minerals include manganese-rich aegirine, richterite, braunite, magnetite, hausmannite, rhodonite and hedyphane (HOM).

The type locality is Långban, Filipstad, Värmland County, Sweden.
